📘 Park Overview

Born in Kinderhook, New York, in 1782, Martin Van Buren was the first president born a US citizen. His life spanned the American Revolution to the Civil War and was shaped by the most important issues of the era: US expansionism and the removal of Indigenous people, states’ rights, and slavery. This historic landscape invites reflection on the many lives and legacies woven into its past.

The servants' dining room in the basement of Lindenwald. A round table fill the center of the room.

During Martin Van Buren’s ownership, this basement space served as a work and dining area for servants. However, during the Van Ness (1797) era, it may have been part of the living space for enslaved people.

Route 9H Road Closure and Detour in Livingston Information
Beginning May 25 and lasting until November 18, Route 9H in both directions is closed in Livingston between the intersection with US Route 9 and NY Route 82 and Orchard Road. All lanes are closed due to road work. Detours are posted.
Notice Of House Tour Hours
There are some search engines giving the incorrect hours for house tours. We are open 7 days a week 9 am- 4 pm. Stop by the visitors center to sign up for a tour.
No House Tours on Tuesdays and Wednesdays Information
During the 2025 visitor season, Martin Van Buren’s historic home, Lindenwald, is closed to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Guided house tours are available Thursday through Monday. The park grounds and Visitor Center remain open seven days a week.

Winter Hours of Operation Information
Effective immediately, Martin Van Buren National Historic Site is in winter hours of operation. Both Lindenwald (the historic home of President Martin Van Buren) and the park visitor center are closed to the public. Visitor operations, including guided house tours and visitor center services, are anticipated to resume at a TBD date in May/June 2026. The park grounds remain open daily from 7:00 a.m. until dusk. Please note that no visitor services are available during this period.

Two more days to tour Lindenwald! Information
There are only two days remaining in the visitor season to tour Lindenwald! Saturday and Sunday November 26 & 27. Tours are offered at 9:00, 11:00, 1:00 and 3:00 each day. There are no tours available Friday November 25.
