📘 Park Overview

Thomas Jefferson called it "The turn of the tide of success." The battle of Kings Mountain, fought October 7th, 1780, was an important American victory during the Revolutionary War. The battle was the first major patriot victory to occur after the British invasion of Charleston, SC in May 1780. The park preserves the site of this important battle.

Kings Mountain National Military Park is located on South Carolina Highway 216. From Greenville, SC travel on I-85 North to NC Exit #2. Turn right onto Hwy 216. From Charlotte, NC travel on I- 85 South to NC Exit #2. Turn left onto Hwy 216.

Hazardous Weather Conditions Park Closure
Kings Mountain National Military Park has temporarily closed park entrances and visitor facilities until further notice for winter storm Gianna and for the safety of visitors and staff. Park services and programs are also canceled until further notice. The following Kings Mountain National Military Park areas and visitor facilities are closed until further notice for winter storm Gianna and for the safety of visitors and staff: visitor center, visitor parking lot, Battlefield Trail, and park headquarters.
Visitor Center Parking Lot Walkway Construction Caution
From July 29 to August 1, there will be construction ongoing in the park as we prepare to replace the asphalt walkways around the visitor center parking lot. The park and visitor center will remain open and accessible to the public as usual.
Weekend Event Postponed
Due to forecasted rainfall amounts, all events for 10/3-4/15 are cancelled. The park hopes to reschedule for 10/10-11/15. Please call 864-936-7921 after 10/5/15 to confirm the status of the event.
Visitor Center Parking Lot Walkway Construction Caution
From August 18 to September 1, there will be ongoing construction as we finish up replacing the asphalt walkways around the visitor center parking lot. The park and visitor center will remain open and accessible to the public.
Park Wide Caution Caution
Visitors should exercise caution when hiking areas of the park that have opened since Hurricane Helene. Hazards on trails and in forested areas such as hanging tree limbs, debris on the ground, and washed-out sections of trails and bridges are possible.

At this time all sales of America the Beautiful Passes are temporary unavailable. Please check https://store.usgs.gov/recreational-passes for locations. We will advise when passes are available for sale. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Trail Closure Caution
Kings Mountain National Military Park has temporarily closed the Battlefield Trail until further notice due to lingering ice following the passing of #winterstormfern and for the safety of visitors and staff. All other areas have reopened.
Visitor Center Parking Lot Walkway Construction: Phase 2 Caution
On August 4 to August 15, phase 2 of the visitor center parking lot walkway construction will take place. The park and visitor center will remain open and accessible to the public while work is done to improve the walkways and the ADA ramp.
Battlefield Trail Construction
The Battlefield Trail is currently open but may close again near the end of July to complete construction. Please call 864-936-7921 for updates.

If you are interested in obtaining an America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreation Lands Pass (Senior Pass, Access Pass, Every Kid in a Park Pass, etc.), please call 864-936-7921 to ensure that a qualified park staff member is present.
Park facilities closed Christmas Day and New Years Day Information
The visitor center and the restrooms will be closed on December 25th and January 1st. The grounds and trails will be open from sunrise to sunset.

Fall & Winter Lantern Tour

Join us this evening for a ranger led lantern tour of the battlefield. This is a free program but reservations are required. Reservations will be open on December 30th. Call (864) 936-7921 x2 to make a reservation. We will walk the 1.5-mile battlefield trail, so please dress for the weather. Each month the tour will have a different overall theme or focus, and will also touch on topics related to the night sky and the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. Please arrive by 5:45PM, the program will end at 8:00PM.
