Carter G. Woodson, there was very little accurate written history about the lives and experiences of Americans of African descent.
Today a National Historic Site, Dr. Woodson’s home served as the headquarters for the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
Dr. Woodson established Negro History Week here in 1926, which we celebrate today as Black History Month.
The Carter G. Woodson Home National Historic Site is temporarily closed due to a full renovation project. The Grand Reopening of the site will take place on Saturday, November 7, 2026. Please continue to visit the website for future updates.

Overview:
The site preserves the final home of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who lived here from 1922 until his death in 1950. A scholar who dedicated his life to the field of African-American history, Dr. Woodson used the home as the headquarters for the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (later renamed the Association for the Study of African American Life and History) and he established Negro History Week here in 1926 (now celebrated as Black History Month). Through his Associated Publishers, Inc., company, he also published the Association's journal and books on African-American history from the home.During much of Dr. Woodson's life, there was very little information and a lack of knowledge concerning African-American life and history. Through his extensive studies, Dr. Woodson almost single-handedly established African-American historiography. Dr. Woodson's research continues to educate and inspire people everywhere by recounting the contributions of African Americans to this great nation, which in turn has impacted the world. Today, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History continues Woodson's tradition of disseminating information about black life, history, and culture to the global community.

Join the National Park Service and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, Inc. (ASALH) at the grand re-opening of the Carter G. Woodson Home National Historic Site on Saturday, November 7, 2026 from 9 am to 5 pm.
All tours and programming will begin at the historic Shiloh Baptist Church (1500 Ninth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20001). Free tour tickets will be available on a first come first served basis beginning at 9 am to 4 pm. There will be multiple tours per hour. Pick up your tickets at the National Park Service Welcome Tent located in Shiloh Baptist Church. Tours will go through the new visitor center and will include Dr. Woodson’s home.
This special event is free and open to the public.
From The National Mall travel east onto Constitution Avenue NW, until you come to 12th Street (which is a one-way street). Make a left turn onto 12th Street.
Continue traveling north on 12th Street NW, until you come to Rhode Island Avenue. Make a right turn onto Rhode Island Avenue. Keep straight on Rhode Island Avenue, until you come to 9th Street. Make a right turn onto 9th Street. Keep straight and 1538 9th Street will be the third house on the right (the red brick one).
